Haemin Sunim is a Zen monk and professor from South Korea.
He give an advice on dealing with life’s challenges and share his advice on
social networking sites. His advice generally simple, straightforward, and
short. But his advice could help and inspiring people. He discussed the value
of slowing down in our busy modern lives, as well as the art of maintaining and
cultivating self-compassion.
This book has eight chapters, addressing various
aspect of life. Each chapter opens with an essay, which is followed by a series
of short massages (quotes) of advice and wisdom addressed directly to the
readers. In order to consider one by one, and to reconsider and remember, so
the advice may accompany the readers in moments of anxiety or despair, and
remained that we are not alone.
First chapter is rest. Haemin Sunim ask the readers to
take a rest while we confront trouble in our life. “Don’t struggle to heal your
wounds. Just pour time into your heart and wait. When your wounds are ready,
they will heal on their own.”
Second chapter is mindfulness. In this chapter we
learn how to deal with negative emotions like anger and jealously as well as
life’s disappointments. “Life is like theater. You assigned a role. If you
don’t like the role, keep in mind that you have the power to re-create the role
you want. “
Third chapter is passion. The passion of Haemin Sunim
is teaching. He is always enthusiastic while teaching. But his enthusiasm was
creating some problem. Then he realized that sometimes we have to temper our
eagerness. “Choose happiness, not
success, as your life’s goal. If you become successful but aren’t happy, then
what the point?”
Forth chapter is relationships. To be free, happy and
can go on living our life, The author want the readers to forgive the person
who: betrayed us and left, who stole from us and disappeared, who stabbed us
in the back and acted as if nothing happened. “We live among countless
relation: family, friends, colleagues, neighbours, etc. Life is good when these
relationships are good. Being happy by yourself doesn’t last long.”
Fifth chapter is love. In here Haemin Sunim talks
about his first love. He felt in love to American missionary whom he met by
chance on the streets of Seoul. But it was unrequited. “We should love people
like the sun loves the earth. The sun loves the earth without choosing to. It nourishes trees and flowers, expecting
nothing in return. It does not withhold its rays but brightens everything with
its presence.”
Sixth chapter is life. There are three thing we have
to do to be happy. First, people are not as interested to us as we had always
believed. Second, not everyone has to like us. Third, if we are brutally honest
with ourselves, most things we do for others are in fact for ourselves. Stop
worrying about what other think and just do what your heart wishes.
Seventh chapter is the future. Sometimes we worried
about our future or unsure about our true calling, in here Haemin Sunim give an
advice on how to increase self-awareness and how to discover it. “Your freedom
is more important than money. It is better to live the kind of life you want
than to earn more and be constrained. Don’t sell your freedom.”
The last chapter is spirituality. This chapter is a
little sensitive, because spiritual is always relating to religious belief.
Which mean Haemin Sunim talk about his belief “Buddha”. But it is still worth
to read and valuables. “Just as my faith is precious and significant to me,
wouldn’t it be the same for people of other faiths? Just as my mother is dear
and important to me, wouldn’t this be the case for my neighbour and his mother?”
The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down serve
as guide, and spiritual advice on everything from handling setback at work to
dealing with love and relationships. Also as a calming reminder of the strength
and joy that come from slowing down. In addition throughout these book are
colour illustrations by Young-Cheol Lee. These are intended as calming
interludes, to be lingered over much like the meditation prompts are meant to
be.
